Learning to write an article or learning by writing an article?

On the first lecture of a course called Theories of rehabilitation, our lecturer asked us a tricky question: “would you like to write an article in pairs and publish it together?”. After a few minutes silence we surprised the lecturer by answering why not! I think none of us really realised, what we had to face – not even the lecturer. It seemed to be interesting to get acquainted with a topic that interests us individually, to achieve a deeper insight and at the same time learn something about academic writing skills.

What did we actually learn?

Academic writing was new to all of us. As a future-specialists in the field of rehabilitation, we need to be able to write articles and produce academic papers. By getting feedback from lecturer and peer students we could improve the context and writings. By giving feedback for the others we also learned to check and read our own text with different attitude.

Cooperation skills are needed in every field of working – within and across the professional sectors. In our group we have people living in different countries and face-to-face meetings were not possible for everyone. That challenged us to find new ways of communication and utilise better emails, sharepoint, skype etc.

Implementing a master level course by writing an article

This task taught us to read and summarize articles – search for proper papers and from a huge amount of material gather the most important information and write it in a short and readable form. Cooperation supported each other to work better. By writing a scientific article with another student taught us to discover our own styles. There are many ways of writing and implementing a writing process and it is important to know one’s own style. We learned also each other’s styles and ways of working, which helps us to work with different type of people in the future. Specialists need to be able to cooperate in different situations and with different persons.

What was it like?

Writing an article in scientific style was very demanding and time consuming, but not too difficult and nothing ever comes for free. It was a challenge to work with a person you did not know too well and to combine the different ways of working. But that all made us learn new master level skills and understand learning and writing better. We found out that it was a good way of implementing one of our courses. We got deeper insight of own topics and expanded our knowledge by peer reviewing articles written by others as well. We have different occupations, different perspectives, different backgrounds and by writing articles in pairs we could really utilise our strengths and differences.

Could we have learned more or better about theories of rehabilitation by traditional way of studying master level courses? We can’t say. At least we learned a lot of things we wouldn’t have learned otherwise – and all these things are very important when acting as a specialist in social and health care sector.

Hopefully health care professionals and students will find the publication and it gives some extra knowledge for them too! The publication is found here: http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi-fe2019112043233

Namibian flavours and business networking

Oxtail stew in tomato and green pepper sauce, charred lamb chops, grilled chicken, oven-baked salmon, green peas and carrots in coconut sauce, meat and vegetable samosas, traditional Namibian corn side dish called pap accompanied by basmati rice, fresh mixed salad and Namibian flat bread. The dinner at the residence of the Namibian ambassador of Sweden was sumptuous. A real feast for the SME Aisle project team and Namibian business delegation who started their tour around Central Baltic countries on Sunday, November 10 in Stockholm.

His Excellency, Mr. George M. Liswaniso, and his lovely staff showed great hospitality as the SME Aisle SAMK team lead, Dr Minna Keinänen-Toivola, Captain Heikki Koivisto, Ms. Nina Savela and Ms. Jonna Ristolainen from SAMK were kindly invited to this delightful banquet along with five Namibian business representatives, Business Sweden and (official) project partners from Latvia and Estonia. SAMK is the leading partner in the Central Baltic Interreg funded project SME Aisle (2018-2021).

The internationally operating project promotes business between small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and Southern African countries. Namibia promises a great potential as a stable entry point to larger markets in the surrounding countries. It is a small but developing market and therefore open to new businesses. In addition, SAMK has over six years of experience in cooperating with a wide array of stakeholders in Namibia.

Cosy atmosphere and great business networking

Latvian project partners from MASOC (Association of Mechanical Engineering and Metalworking Industries of Latvia) and LCCI (Latvia Chamber of Commerce and Industry), Project manager Cecilia Leideman-Eyre Bäck from Business Sweden, and Swedish SME representatives were already waiting at the residence as the SME Aisle SAMK team arrived receiving a warm welcome regardless of the delayed arrival of the plane from Turku to Stockholm. Namibian wine was served during the ambassador’s speech.

There was time for networking, and the cosy atmosphere encouraged mingling and getting acquainted with the guests. Minna, Heikki and Nina already knew the project partners and some of the business delegation members from their several visits to Namibia. To Jonna, who has only worked for three months in the project, it was a perfect occasion to meet the project partners in person. Names behind email addresses got faces.

Next day: SME Aisle workshop for Swedish businesses

The following day was more busier. Nina and Cecilia (Business Sweden) had organized a workshop and luncheon in World Trade Center. Namibian businesses from various fields of expertise presented their companies to Swedish businesses and organizations. After a networking lunch (which, by the way was stroganoff and pickled gherkins), the business delegation continued to a site visit at the company Bombardier, specialized in transportation and locomotives.

SME Aisle project team members focused on discussing the administration of the project as well as upcoming events and tasks before starting the journey back home. Business travelling continued for Captain Heikki (as he is known in Namibia) as he accompanied Namibians on M/S Romantika to Riga where they were hosted by MASOC and LCCI. Another workshop with Latvian businesses and site visits was held on Tuesday. Finally, all work and no play is not fun, so the Southern travellers were taken to a KHL ice hockey match. A new experience for many!

Päivä johtajan saappaissa

Perjantaina 11.10.2019 vietettiin kansainvälistä tyttöjen päivää, jonka kunniaksi Plan International järjesti Girls Takeover -päivän.

Päivän aikana tytöt ja nuoret naiset ympäri maailmaa astuivat päiväksi poliittisten päättäjien, yhteiskunnallisten ja taloudellisten johtajien virkaan. Vuoden 2018 kampanjan aikana tytöt valtasivat yli 2000 johtajan paikan, 70 eri maassa. Tänä vuonna minut valittiin Porin Lyseon lukion opiskelijoiden joukosta kampanjaan mukaan. Johdin päivän ajan Satakunnan ammattikorkeakoulua toimitusjohtaja, rehtori Jari Multisillan rinnalla.

Päivä alkoi johtajan työpisteeltä.

Päivä alkoi tutustumiskierroksella talossa. Kierroksen aikana minulle konkretisoitui, kuinka isosta paikasta on kyse.

Opiskelijakunta SAMMAKKO kertoi toiminnastaan.
